March 2010 Newsletter
I have a colleague who often says, “Free just means someone else paid”. She says it in relation to the quality services available through centers like ours at no cost to our clients. A quick look at our annual budget confirms the truth of this comment – the cost of ministry is indeed steep, and that fact often is lost on those we serve. When you consider the time and talent given sacrificially by our volunteers, staff and board members, that cost climbs even steeper.
I get so frustrated when a client fails to show up for her ultrasound appointment, or doesn't come pick up the bag of maternity clothing that someone put together for her, or complains that we don't have the brand of formula she prefers. When my spirit is weak, my flesh thinks things like “How can they be so demanding? And what about a little gratitude?” Sometimes, I even say such things out loud and feel justified in the speaking.
I've been thinking lately about the truth of that comment – free just means someone else paid – in relation to myself before a holy God. The free gift of salvation was far from free. It came at great cost to our Lord. Far steeper than any earthly budget, or any sacrifice of time I've ever made. And those grumbling thoughts about demands and gratitude, which this same price-paying Savior would be more that justified in entertaining, are mercifully withheld. How utterly humbling.
With this perspective, I can praise God for the work He does in us as well as through us here at Hope Pregnancy Center. Through the challenges and miracles and frustrations and joys of ministry, I am learning more about Him and the debt of gratitude I owe to the King of Kings. I am encouraged to consider the costs that have been paid on my behalf – by my Lord, my parents, church and ministry leaders, mentors and friends – and offer a word of thanks for all that has been invested in me and for me.
On behalf of the ministry, I also give thanks for all those who sacrificially invest their time, talent or resources in this work of life. Godbless them – God bless you – for paying so that others may receive. May the Lord multiply these gifts and bring others to reinforce the efforts of those who give them.
Because He paid,
